Introduction to the Old Testament

The Old Testament is a story told twice (correct lecture citation – add to resources). In Genesis, we see the first story of creation followed by a fall into sin and then Adam and Eve exiled from the garden. Then from Exodus through Chronicles – the last book in the Hebrew Old Testament – we see Israel being created as a separate nation as they depart Egypt through the Red Sea, falling into a cycle of sin through generation after generation, and finally being exiled from their God-given land.

As a matter of fact, many things happen in two’s in the Bible: there are two testaments, two creation accounts – Genesis 1 and Genesis 2, two Adams – Adam and Jesus, the greater Adam, then we see two worlds – a wold before the flood and a world after the flood, two meeting places – the tabernacle and the temple, two exiles – exile from Eden and exile from Israel, two covenants – the covenant of works and the covenant of grace, two comings of Jesus – as a baby and as the Conquering Savior, two creations – “in the beginning” and “a new heaven and a new earth”. We also see many pairs of characters: Moses and Joshua, David and Solomon, Elijah and Elisha. (correct lecture citation – add to resources)

As the story comes to an end, we’re left wondering what will become of Israel, God’s chosen people. God has promised redemption, but through whom will it come? (correct lecture citation – add to resources)
